QUeen of MY HEART

BY Leala King

Mother. Mom. Mama. Madre. Ma. We’ve all got one. No matter the status of our relationship to our mothers, we can all say that we wouldn’t be where we are without them. For me, there is nothing like my mom’s love, and being able to share music with her is one of my greatest pleasures. These artists take it a step further, dedicating their music to their moms. The playlist spans all genres, as our love for our mothers spans all cultures. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms who make our world a more supportive, loving, and enriching place to be

DK FINEST

BY Ditte Ravnild

Jump aboard this slow jam trip of vibey tunes from the shores of Denmark. A mainly downtempo playlist of the finest Danish artists that I think deserve to be shared outside of Denmark too. It takes me back home to Copenhagen when I need to escape the crazy streets of New York and covers me with a blanket of soulful voices and softs beats. Crammed with strong females, some wistful male artists and a few electronic tracks it brings a mix of melancholy and joy-complementing the Danish culture of happiness and a comfortable life mixed with concerns, norms, and fears of failing. Enjoy it on a Sunday morning with the newspaper and an “ostemad” - the Danish way.

How can the distinction between fucking and making love be expressed through art? Here’s my attempt to answer—through 1 poem, 2 playlists, and 3 images.
Please enjoy.

VIVSUAL X BASEMNT VOL I

BY Vivian Zhang

Fucking is stress relief
A sharp breath in before each verse
Emphatic slaps of a bass-heavy bridge over troubled lyrics

VIVSUAL X BASEMNT VOL II

BY Vivian Zhang

Making love is life relief
The warm crackle of static between each track
Smooth fades that forgive and forget my rougher edges

BACK AT IT

BY Patrick Dohan

This jazz fusion album was inspired by the amalgamation of culture, art, and music in Oakland, CA. While it has some nods to Oakland funk greats like Tower of Power, it was also heavily influenced by musicians like John Scofield, Stanley Clarke, and Jaco Pastorius—the latter two driving much of the bass-forward nature of the album, and my own playing style. I am, first and foremost, a bass player, as evident in much of my compositional style and process. Then I fill in the rest, having played all the other instrumentation on this record.
